too loud
(Digital Art, 3000 x 3000 pixels)
This piece is meant to convey the overwhelm and paralysis so many experience when their life stressors or symptom load become unmanageable. It depicts a feminine figure hunched over in a defensive position, her eyes glazed – surrounded by disembodied mouths speaking or yelling. The effect is meant to be a visceral and universally understood one: it’s just too loud. I began creating digital art as a portable alternative to traditional mediums during graduate school and created this piece during a time in my life that I felt the immense burden of so many expectations, opinions, and emotions of others. I hope that this piece can also resonate with those who feel burdened by other disparate experiences such as sensory issues, vicarious trauma and stress, hallucinations, and interpersonal conflict. I am thankful for avenues such as LACPA to provide a space to illuminate depictions of mental health.
