ANNE CARSON, PhD

Art and creativity have been part of my life since childhood in one way or another. In graduate school, I took more formal drawing and painting classes. In my own therapy, I experienced the value of art therapy. About 25 years ago, I experimented with stained glass and then fused glass art. For me, it has brought times of peak experiences and better emotional health.

As a practicing psychologist (private practice), I emphasize the importance of creativity with my clients. Some come with an established love of art and creativity, others dip their feet into trying different modes. This is often a bridge to deeper insights into their own emotional lives and beliefs. Many have done collages of different sorts that help them gain a sense of direction for their lives and participation in the paths they choose.

Art, in whatever form, tells the story of the artist at the moment of creation and completion. Color, form, size, detail all share in the story and complexity of the artist. In the darkest of times, the story is told often when words can’t convey the message. In happier times, the choice of image or piece brings an energy that enlivens the viewer. This is a powerful path for many to self-reflection and healing.

Resilience in COVID
(Fused Glass, 12” x 12”)

This piece shows viral particles with brighter colored ends to the stocks on the surface of the particle. The blue pieces are part of the body’s natural healing capacity in T cells that work to control the virus. One of the particles has been disarmed by a T cell and others are being approached. This image shows that even during the toughest times, there can be beauty and resilience as the body works to return to a healthy place. This is true for not only physical attacks on the body but also mental and emotional distress.
