MICHAEL C. ROBERTS, PhD, ABPP

I sense many of us would love to getaway during this time of COVID. Just to get away with the imagined destination unknown or vaguely conceived. The waiting boat offers an escape open to many possibilities on a mountain lake. Grab the rope and shove off. As a psychologist wearing many hats as a psychotherapist, educator, researcher, andconsultant, I see my career similarly of creating opportunities for people to develop their own possibilities.

Escape on the Lake
(Photograph)

Via the art of photography, Escape on the Lake presents an imagined break-out, in one’s musings when the pandemic might narrow these possibilities. One wishes to get away from a constricted reality if only momentarily. Although seemingly hemmed in by rock walls for a safe harbor, the opening out to the lake invites Walter Mitty-like adventures on the water or simply promises an afternoon of gentle rocking of waves while pondering cloud formations and reverie away from pandemic demands. This photo was shot by an analogue camera with a cheap plastic lens and spring mechanism. The Diana camera (and similarly the Holga camera) often produces a soft focus with a vague, dreamy quality on photographic film. Like an Impressionist painting, Diana photographs encourage searching for details and meaning while offering opportunities to project oneself into the image of possibly getting away.
