10,000 Feet Summit to Sea
(Digital Photo)
"The photographer, Lori Hops, visited Haleakala Summit on the island of Maui in Hawaii, on the summer solstice, June 21, 2022. It was a dream come true, joy embodied, being in the middle of the Pacific ocean, home to the ancients, an island land infused with love, which many tie to their hearts. After travel restrictions were lifted from the pandemic, wondering if we might ever see the islands again, laughter rang out in the thin air, 10,000 feet of distance from the top of the volcano plunging through misty cloud cover, parting for a moment with a clear view to the land and sea below. The view from rock to cliff to cloud to sea displayed nature's bounty.
Just after the photo was taken, Lori climbed to the top of the volcano, as the setting sun streamed behind her. Her image was projected onto the clouds directly across the crater valley, like a movie screen, surrounded by a halo of rainbow light. It was a perfect greeting from sky, sun, cloud, mountain and solstice alignment. Moving her arms and legs, with a squeel of delight, her projected shadow danced puppet like far across the divide onto the puffy white cinema spectacle, marking the longest day, and shorted night. A contrast of dark and light."
