RICHARD ESPINOZA, PsyD
Richard “Dr. E” Espinoza, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist and artist based in Los Angeles, California. As he has come to be known by students, patients, and patrons alike, Dr. E works primarily with acrylics and paints his interpretation of the psychotherapist experience. Drawing from his understanding of the Unconscious, as influenced by Freudian & Winnicottian Psychoanalysis, Surrealism, and Dadaism, Dr. E is self-taught in color theory and color mixing. As such, Dr. E strives to develop his technical skill in the pursuit of Photorealism but is willing to radically accept producing Abstractionism in the meantime.

I cannot say psychotherapy is easy
At our best, psychotherapists are sages
Who carefully kindle a flame, and we use this fire
To light the paths of others. Sometimes the light we cast
Is bright and is received as a beacon of hope.
Other times the path is very long and very dark
And the sojourners we guide cannot trust
The faint glimmer of light they perceive
Or some wanderers may not deem it worth the effort
To walk towards the light we pour so much into
In turn, we may try to make our distant flame bigger and brighter
To assure a safe journey.
At our worst, psychotherapists are hermits
Painstakingly maintaining a flame
To shine the light ahead while casting a shadow on ourselves
Leaving what’s behind us in darkness
Losing ourselves in maintaining this flame
Whether for ourselves or others
Inevitably depleting our reserves
When the flame burns out, then what?
