DEBRA BORYS, PhD
My interest in making art, and development as a visual artist, has blossomed through the years along a parallel track to my development as an intersubjective psychodynamic therapist dealing with trauma patients, and also the development of more metaphysical aspects of my spiritual life and growth. I attribute this to how both my therapy work, and the transcendent, derive and create much meaning from symbolism, which is often visual in nature. I’ve also recently returned to writing poetry after many years, finding that my intervening explorations into visual symbolism have lent greater expansiveness and availability of visual metaphor in that pursuit. I find great joy in the synergistic effects of all of these activities on my emotional life and relationships.
Women looking over shoulders at the Right
(Mixed Media Collage, 16” High x 20” Wide)
I was prompted to create this piece near the end of the Trump administration when the far-right wing conservatives began working ever-harder to reverse women’s rights and two anti-female judges were illegally added to SCOTUS who had also perjured themselves when questioned in their hearings re Roe etc. I submit this one day after Roe v Wade was outrageously reversed. Women now have to look over their shoulders to the Right ever more frightfully.
