DAVID FEINGOLD, EdD, MSW, MS
I use digital art to express both my inner and outer journey of life with the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. My artwork turns my feelings inside out as a form of self-therapy as well as a way to advocate via public exposure, for those with mental illness. My interest in and the undertaking of displaying my art in shows and through numerous internet sites, has allowed me to expose the scourge of bipolar stigma and offer ways to help individuals recover from its personal and societal ill-effects. This effort dovetails with my interest in advocating for awareness of the social injustices embedded in and perpetuated by our collective society against the Black community, in the case of my entry, Black women.
Land of Opportunity
(Digital Art, 20" High x 24" Wide)
"Land of Opportunity" speaks to the plight of Black women and employment in our country. There is a disturbing and destructive contradiction depicting Black women. The media portrays them as hard-working, talented, and successful in the realm of entertainment, yet at the same time depicted as lazy, apathetic, and the quintessential welfare queen. They also face barriers to workplace advancement, limitations in hiring, and once on the job, discrimination and stereotyping. The United States is certainly the "Land of Opportunity." But once you get the lay of the land, you discover there are better opportunities for some than for others.
