MARIE K. MAURO, MAAT
The creative process allows one to access implicit memories. Images and associations are often tucked away in the subcortical structures of the brain. It is here that we find healing through the exposure of embedded synapses thus allowing healing through integration. When I create, I allow the images to show themselves. Through art, my psyche communicates its needs as it dives into unchartered territory.
In therapy, the patient has everything they need to heal. The nervous system naturally wants to function at an optimal level. When we give credence to our bodies, our nervous system rewires itself. Channeling creative processes through the body creates a flow that pours onto the canvas allowing the implicit to become tangible. It is here that our intrinsic knowing facilitates growth and healing.
The subjugation of women, suppression of voice, and denial of value undermine empowerment. Systemic and intergenerational biases, until uncovered, are covert and oppressive. Through the creative process we can discover healing powers and strength within ourselves.
Marionette
(Acrylics on Canvas, 40” x 30”)
This self-portrait is of a memory that was too painful to verbalize at the time of creation. It was body sourced, portraying the feeling of powerlessness while being manipulated. Large, rhythmic, bilateral movements facilitated visceral engagement creating a sense of isolation and detachment. The hazy blue undertones from the background captured the state of dissociation. As I sensed feelings of shame and self-loathing smudges organically seeped through onto the figure. The nightgown was colored baby power pink displaying the innocence of the female figure that was inappropriately sexualized.
