JODI J. DE LUCA, PhD

The art and science of psychotherapy parallels life in many ways. Analogous to the uncertainty of life, psychotherapy is about change. As therapists, to share in one’s life experiences, and to bring about change for the better, is a privilege. Through art, I attempt to advocate for positive change by capturing the essence of human emotion for a moment in time, particularly under the most challenging of circumstances. The goal of consolidating art and psychotherapy is to promote a better understanding of human emotion and behavior as they relate to social oppression and the need for ongoing advocacy for human equality and overall wellbeing.

Oppression
(Mixed Media on Canvas, 36” x 24” x 1”)

The intent of the piece Oppression is to elicit memory and emotion in support of the Black Lives Matter movement during the COVID-19 era. The diversity of mixed media layering, and the integration of color and depth, symbolize 400 years of injustice and inequality. The stark contrast between the fragmentation of light and the aggregation of darkness symbolize the ongoing struggle, sacrifice, and dedication towards both national and global initiatives for healing, freedom, and justice for black people, and by extension, for all human beings collectively.
