GAYLE SKAWEN:NIO MORSE, PhD
The unconscious, a secret place -a whole country really, that we guard and protect, even though we are unaware we are doing so. That country, often unexplored can be an adventure to be had if only we are brave enough to face the darkness with the light. Then, only then, can we see our mirrored faces unveiled, naked, authentic and finally whole. Dr. Morse has used poetry to uncover those hidden spaces, those hidden secrets. Dr. Morse’s world view is informed by her Mohawk spiritual influences, traditional practices of a “GoodMind”, and community connections. In her work she regularly collaborates with friends from around the world.
Poetry, Painting and a Piece
(Video Collaboration)
In this work, Poetry, Painting and a Piece she has asked her collaborators to work with her in the spoken word and the music. The artists collaborate to merge the sounds of newly composed piece of music that attempts to match the mood of the paintings that were an effort to echo the feelings of a set of poems. All pieces were done from a distance in the time of covid and were done to reflect the sadness ,the emptiness, and the fears of the enforced isolation yet what emerges is a glimmer of hope. All three created their work separately, independently, and in isolation. The works are combined to merge into a kind of hall of mirrors that reflect the artist unconscious feelings and motivations heretofore not consciously recognized.
