“Art has been an enduring passion in my life. In my paintings, I try to capture the beauty, deep emotion and mystery of the natural world, the people, objects and creatures that I’m immersed in. The strong desire to express those elements of life are what inspire me to paint. Whatever the subject, it’s important to me that I place them in a context that is unique and specific to them and that allows us to understand more of who and what they are.
I aspire to capture the complexity and depth of feeling, along with the mystery and beauty that I experience in the world. I hope my love of those things comes through in what the viewer experiences. “
Doreen
(water based oil on canvas 36"x48")
This painting is part of a body of work "States of Being" which explore the dualities of innocence and knowing, trauma and peace, birth and decay, presence and loss. Each piece acknowledges a self-contained lifecycle captured in a moment of undeniable grace perched on the edge of imminent change.
My work is deeply rooted in the psychology of our attachments to things we know are fleeting. In painting blooms of life, I tease out the unbearable loss that is layered beneath each subject. I start this exploration with underpainting that unites the unseen grit of my own emotions as I work. What emerges is the value of continuity, the stories behind the story, the places from which my subjects were born.
"Doreen" is filled with joy and’ invites an expansion of how we instinctively navigate the realities of life - however stunning, however fleeting.
