Haight-Ashbury Summer of Love
(48”x48”. Acrylic on 1.5” cradled wood board.)
This butterfly painting was influenced by my childhood in the 1960’s during the hippie peace & love movement. When I was 10 years old I visited San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district with my uncle. It was the summer of 1967 and the sidewalks were packed with hippies. I was mesmerized and felt as though I had found my people. The butterfly wings contain mandalas, representing the entry of Eastern religion into American culture at that time. I’ve always loved how butterflies symbolize transformation.
