Sun Strikes Sand, Surf, Light Dispersed
(Digital image from video)
I recorded a slow-motion video with an iPhone, while at the ocean shore in Ventura, California, USA on November 12 2021, at 4:07 pm Pacific time. I had asked the ocean to supply its beauty when feeling weary from isolation due to the pandemic, and heaviness from a weight of responsibilities. Reviewing the video, I captured the digital frame, which looked like a light being on the sand, between waves. It seemed to have its own solid presence, and strength. It seemed to be heaven sent. I loved how the waves were in motion, the light on the water was bright, and the sand sparkled with a richness of color from the setting autumn sun. It gave me a sense of support, mystery and guidance, as it took shape in between the waves, soon to erase its form. A reminder to take up space, clarity of vision, presence in each moment.
Preparing the art for the online gallery created this notion of repeating iterations of how the image appears and moves between people, technology and interface amongst them, not unlike the waves moving the sand and sunlight on the shore. Each time the image is seen, it creates its own signature, impression, voice, though the image does not change on its own. Thus the poem Iterations was born.
