HANK WEBER, PhD
I am a self-taught artist who worked as a psychologist for almost 50 years, but always nurtured a fantasy of being an artist. When I was a child I was identified by the adults in my life as having artistic talent, but I was raised in the age of sputnik, and was strongly encouraged to choose a technical profession, which would yield a steady paycheck. A college counselor after looking at my psychological test results urged me into the profession of psychology. It was only after my first painting award in a county fair in SW Washington in the mid 80’s that I began painting on a regular basis. My professional painting career began when I was invited into an artist co-op and my development as an artist began to parallel my development as a psychotherapist.
TOO MANY HATS
(Acrylic On Canvas, 20" High x 16" Wide)
This is a self portrait painted in the months during my preparation for retirement from the profession of psychology. It reflects the stress I was feeling at that time of transition when I was letting go of my professional identity and moving into a different realm. I think the title is self-explanatory.
