I come from a family of artists including my mother and three brothers. My father was a physician with no interest in art whatsoever. I'll leave the family dynamics to your (artistic) imagination. I had no formal art training until I was in my 40's. At that time my mother had built a large and inspiring art studio in her home. I asked her to teach me how to copy a few paintings by Joanquin Sarolla, my favorite oil painting artist from the Impressionist era. She gladly fulfilled my wish and we spent many hours with me soaking in her masterful instruction. She also made me a delicious lunch during each session. So, I gradually learned to draw and paint and create some beautiful paintings for my home. There are many morals to this story in addition to "It's never too late."

Hitchcock vs The Vase
(Oil on canvas, 14" x 16")

As an artist and psychologist I love the humor often found in certain visual/perceptual as for example in the famous "Faces/Vase" phenomena. I enjoy the provocative learning opportunities that are available to anyone who is willing to slow down, listen, and pay attention. This has become especially important in our fast faced, technological world. As often as I can I seek out opportunities to draw. It is very relaxing and promotes a special form of mindfulness. A side benefit of learning to draw is getting to know your own brain a bit better. For example, how for the view the two modes (Faces & Vase) compete and cooperate. There is a quick drawing exercise that will be made available at the Mirrors of the Mind exhibit to help involve the viewer in a Gestalt-like experience!
