MARK V. MELLINGER, PhD

I was an artist first. Studied at Cooper Union in the 60s. By a circuitous route I have been a psychologist and later a psychoanalyst for the past 40 years and returned to doing art in 2008 as well. The two occupations engage me verbally and visually and got me through this trying time.

In painting, collage and constructions of found material I am centered on the materiality of the media more than symbolism. I aim for a result that speaks wordlessly.

Castration Anxiety
(Sculpture/Assemblage, 22” x 18” x 10”)

A construction of found objects; garden shears, lotus pod, bronze baby shoes, doll hand, machine parts, wire, rubber tubing and lag bolt. Supported by oak segment. A visual evocation of an early, primal terror.
