DOUGLAS GREEN, MFT
I began this painting as an expression of joy, of my love of music – to me the voice of our hearts and souls, what unifies all humanity and yet the clearest expression of individuation. But when it was about half-finished, my father, from whom I inherited that love, died from Covid-19. Suddenly the painting’s meaning changed, to become an ecstatic, furious, blaring rebellion, his passion triumphing over the forces that robbed him of life.
I’ll Never Know What Makes the Rain to Fall
(Acrylic and Wire on Canvas, 24” x 30”)
The title is from an old song. My wish is that, sometimes, when a person sees those words, its tune pops into their head. That literally some letters printed on a page elicit a memory and a melody in their brains, and perhaps even remind them of all the song’s lyrics. To me, that’s music’s magic, an awesome mysterious power that should evoke gratitude in us every moment. A gratitude to shove us out of grief, depression, and resentment, and into mental health.
Just as when the rain falls.
