Deep Blue Sorrow
(Block Print and Watercolor on Paper, 21” x 17”)
Deep Blue Sorrow was a healer, a Medicine Woman. Her people counted on her for cures until explorers invaded and conquered their native land and tribe and brought diseases she had never seen. Diseases became epidemics, tens of thousands, no, millions dead, including her family. “I could not save them,” she wails. Now, she sits alone in her deep blue sorrow. She lived a life of interconnectedness with nature and others until the shattering effects of conquest, domination and loss wreaked havoc on her soul. Brave and traumatized, she ponders how one heals from such devastation in her lifetime.
