HEESUN KIM, LCSW

I painted this portrait in 2007 while studying painting at the school of Art Institute of Chicago. Sometimes, an artwork needs to be given space and time to speak to itself, grow organically, and end at the right time, and we have to observe a moment of soul's emergence with a quiet mind. More than ever, this painting speaks to me and resonates with the time we are experiencing collectively.

Grief Space
(Oil on Canvas, 48” x 24”)

Fortunately, I am still an artist in residence in the therapy room. Art is deeply related to human suffering and healing, and the process of creation in artmaking and therapy is parallel in many ways. We are encouraged to invite inspiration and imagination as a metaphor with curiosity and openness without judgment. Every session and every individual are unique and have their own timing and rhythm. I am honored in their way of processing and humbled to hold their grief space.
