JUDY TODD, PhD

Many of us, in this time of coronavirus, feel helpless, overwhelmed, and lonely, emotions that can lead to depression and anxiety. A good way to counter such feelings is to take action by making something. A sense of agency can result from making almost anything, from bread or pottery to music or poetry. Art therapists know that the value of making art lies not only in expression of emotions, but also in increased feelings of capability and control. Artists know this, too; with all this quarantine time on our hands, many artist and therapist friends say, “Thank heaven we’re artists!”

The Young Cellist 2
(Watercolor and Ink, 15” x 11”)

This artwork that I made recently, “The Young Cellist 2,” shows someone making music. I made something, a picture, of someone making something, music, and used bright color, strong lines, and geometric shapes to suggest the empowering value of doing just that.
